Few people realize that Australia is the biggest island on earth and that in square miles is very similar to the United States.  But whereas the U.S.A is populated throughout, the people of Australia have chosen to live around the coastal regions.  Much of the interior is still unspoiled but there are harsh desert areas, such as the Nullarbor Plain, the Great Sandy Desert, Tanimi Desert, the Simpson and Great Victoria Desert, to name just a few.
